You are totally right, Chuck. I am guilty of that myself and need to check myself more. Along the same lines, those who call themselves the most enlightened often are the least enlightened. I have gotten more "OMG! You teach in DETROIT?!?!!" from so-called equalists in Ann Arbor than from anywhere else. Remind me to tell you the story of when I had to tell someone to go fuck herself after she called my kids "those people". Jeff had to drag me away. It was quite exciting.

The book touches on that somewhat through contextualization of the issue. I'm still early in it, so I'll see if it covers more.

One thing I like is that it challenges middle-class whites not to scapegoat working-class whites for racism. Often I hear middle-class folks look down on racism in lower-income communities, while those very same people just happen to live in an all-white neighborhood. It's not up-front bigotry, but something's goin' on there.

I love the book "Lies". I would recommend that to anyone.
I will have to read the "Uprooting Racism" book. I don't think this book addresses it, but I have heard a lot recently about "interrace" racial issues. I work with mostly African Americans and they have taught me much about how there is a light skinned vs. dark skinned battle WITHIN the AA community. Also, straight hair vs. kinky hair. I thought about it and then told them that there are probably some Orthodox Jews who don't think I'm a real Jew b/c I'm reform & b/c the line stopped at my grandparents (and I later converted officially). Ack! It never ends....
